(home) office

Research shows that a sustainable office space not only helps reduce the impact on the environment, it also has a positive impact on the well-being and mindfulness of employees. Small efforts made by everyone can make a significant difference. Some of our colleagues shared their suggestions and tips to make the (home) office a more planet-friendly place to work.

I bike to work almost every day. This commute clears my head both in the morning and at night when getting back home. It's a wonderful way to build some exercise into my daily routine and I am never stuck in traffic. I never have any parking stress either. The fact that it is a sustainable way to get to work is obviously an added benefit.

I try to avoid ordering food through an app or delivery service. Not only do these companies rely on a lot of single-use packaging, the delivery itself also causes a lot of pollution. That is why I prefer to bring my own food and drinks to work and use my own food container and tableware to avoid waste.

I drink water from a reusable water bottle. For me, this habit is easy to implement, cost-effective and satisfying. It also makes me drink a lot more water per day, which is good for my health. In addition, we have a water tap at the office in Karlsruhe that converts tap water to sparkling cold mineral water. And to be honest, for me that is the best-tasting water.

I try to limit printing documents on paper as much as possible. Our team shares documents via Teams, so all the information I need is readily available. And if it is really necessary to use paper for notes or brainstorming, we have a used paper container next to each printer. The sheets tossed in this basket can be reused as scrap paper.

Avoiding waste is better than reducing waste. When bringing anything into the office I take time to consider if it will generate any waste and what waste stream (trash, food, recycling) it would end up in when it is ready to be thrown out. Waste management begins long before the item enters the waste stream and can only be achieved by everyone working towards it.
