At our university, we have a lot of AV equipment. So we thought about what we could do to make AV greener. Our students have been analyzing the lifecycle of AV-IT devices and it turns out that almost 80% of the lifecycle is about the 'use' phase. So in addition to paying attention to energy consumption, we can also extend the lifespan of AV equipment in a controlled way to lower the demand for the new and novel. That was a real eye-opener. Instead of looking at manufacturers only, we now know that we as end-users have an influence as well. We can play a huge part in decreasing the AV carbon footprint!

Sustainability of audiovisual installations is difficult to measure. One of the main goals for our audiovisual installations is to reduce traveling through the use of web conference solutions and Remote Simultaneous Interpretation Platforms. Another element we consider for the greening of our audiovisual installations is enabling remote management, which reduces traveling for maintenance and support service.
My personal vision is that sustainability goes beyond energy consumption and the lifecycle of the equipment. There is a need to include all elements linked to sustainability throughout the lifetime of the solution.

From our latest webinar engagement in Europe, people voiced their desire to start a green community where different parties – manufacturers through to end users – could share their ideas, debate, discuss and find consensus around green AV. AVIXA recently launched a community that specifically enables this – where passionate leaders in the industry can come together to pool their knowledge, have open discussion, and tackle industry issues in the AVIXA Xchange platform. The strength of AVIXA as a professional society and industry association is we can provide the platform for that meeting of minds, so volunteers can accomplish more together. We look forward to providing a home for the continued work of these motivated volunteers as they build a space within the Xchange around this key industry topic.
“We are convinced that sustainable business is good business”
